Culverhill School

This year Bath Philharmonia were involved in a unique community project involving 2 schools, a Pre-school and Residential Home for elderly people all situated in the same street in Yate, South Gloucestershire.

The project was hosted by Culverhill Special School, a school for pupils with complex educational needs, that has recently celebrated it’s 10 year anniversary, ‘outstanding’ Ofsted and a Special Communications Status Award from the Dept of Education. To mark these achievements the school invited Abbotswood Primary, Phase-5 Nursery and Wapley Court Residential Home– their physical neighbours –to share in a musical extravaganza facilitated by Jason and other musicians from BathPhil.

The children from both schools created a programme of unique music that represented the past and present life of the community. A week of intense workshops and rehearsals culminated in the staging of the Yate Symphony in a large marquee to which all the local community were invited, to the delight of all.  The pieces brought to life the location, woods, mining, hunting, and latterly, shopping activities of Yate vividly using voices, instruments, Soundbeam, a Vuvuzela all accompanied by the legendary and flexible Bathphil string section.

Quotes

"The pupils loved the experience and self esteem soared as they performed to the whole school along with a host of guests. Pupils, staff and visitors who watched the performance were also bowled over by the creative expression and quality of the music that was lifted to fabulous heights by the full backing of the orchestra playing along to Charlie Groves' score. Everyone was moved profoundly and we were thrilled to work with such a talented team."

Andrew Buckton,
Deputy Head of Culverhill School
