Education & Community

Bath Philharmonia has a proud record of education and community work.

Education

Working with children and young people is central to the orchestra’s priorities. With the generous support of charitable Trusts and other grants, players from the orchestra encourage and guide participants in creating and performing their own music.

  • Community

The orchestra is forging strong ties with the wider local community and aspires to take music of the highest quality to those members of the community who may otherwise struggle to access it. With funding in place, Bath Phil musicians will embark on an ambitious 3-year project to perform to groups in residential care, in hospital, and others who are isolated due to ill-health, age or their caring responsibilities.

The orchestra has found an innovative way to reach the wider community - by moving the orchestra around the area and performing in up to three locations in one day. At Christmastime, the string ensemble began the day performing for the passengers and staff at the Check-in area at Bristol Airport. The mixture of well-recognised classic pieces and Christmas tunes meant that harassed travellers were sent on their way with renewed energy. The players then hopped in their cars and dashed to a residential home caring for senior citizens with dementia. It was a delight to see the residents recognize and join in with many of the well-known pieces. The last destination of the day was the South West Children’s Hospice at Charlton Farm, North Somerset. Here, the resident children and their family members were treated to a medley of seasonal music in the comfortable surroundings of the hospice.
