‘The Snowman’ and ‘The Bear’ on the big screen with live orchestra

Saturday 22 December 2018, 3.30pm | The Forum, Bath

A double anniversary for our magical double bill of festive film classics!

This Christmas, Bath Philharmonia returns with a magical double bill of Howard Blake's music set to Raymond Briggs' wonderful animations on the big screen. 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of Briggs’ classic tale of a boy and a snowman as well as being the 20th anniversary of the film The Bear, a heart-warming tale of a girl and a polar bear and her quest to help him find his way back home. It promises to be an unforgettable treat for all the family and a great way to start the Christmas holidays!

Last year, the composer Howard Blake himself said of Bath Philharmonia:

“I  was bowled over by Bath Philharmonia’s performance of The Bear at The Forum. For me this was the first performance of the work as I intended it. It was absolutely stunning!“

Music Director of Bath Phil, Jason Thornton said:

"It’s always a delight to see such a magical response to The Snowman from young and old alike. The concert is totally relaxed and The Forum is full of people of all ages. It’s a brilliant way for young children to experience their first live orchestral concert - I can’t wait.”

And he wasn’t alone, as thrilled audience members have taken to social media in previous years:

"What a great concert!", "Absolutely excellent!” and "It was just beautiful.". Others commented on its "Great atmosphere" and the "Outstanding show ... The start of a very happy Christmas!"

The Forum is a beautifully restored art deco cinema- the perfect place to enjoy he Snowman and The Bear:

The Snowman tells the wonderful story of an unforgettable adventure for a boy named James when a snowman comes to life one winter’s night. Everyone delights in the magical, haunting theme ‘Walking in the Air’ as James flies through the sky with The Snowman.

The Bear is a story of an imaginative girl called Tilly who befriends a Polar Bear at the zoo and wants to help him to get back to the North Pole. One night the polar bear comes to stay with Tilly. She soon finds out that a big bear can cause big problems and takes a lot of looking after!

A forty-strong orchestra –accompanied by guest singers – will skillfully play along to the animation on screen. Our booming low tuba will growl like the polar bear and our fanfare of trumpet players will; herald the arrival of the angels and the Star Bear. Listen as our percussion team try to keep up with The Snowman’s racing motorbike and smile as our celeste player puts the magical sprinkles on top of the Christmas cake!
