Young Carers 2010

Bath Phil’s flagship education project for 2010 was its work with Young Carers from Bath & North East Somerset and West Wiltshire. Due to home responsibilities many participants hadn’t taken part in extra-curricular music ensembles before. We discovered a wealth of talent, much of which being self taught.

Phase 1 – February – May 2010 working with Young Carers aged 7-15. Bath Phil musicians led a series of workshops during respite residential weekends and on weekday evenings. The music enabled the Young Carers to talk about and express their experiences. The performance at the end of Phase One was during the Party in the City to mark the opening of the Bath International Music Festival 2010 in Bath Abbey. The abbey was full and it was an amazingly emotional experience for the audience, including a big contingent of parents, and Young Carers alike.

Phase 2 – May – September 2010 working with Young Carers aged 10-16. For Phase 2 we followed the same format as above. We found the material a lot harder hitting and in many case raw. The music was extraordinary. We gave our first performance of Phase 2 at the Greenbelt Festival in August in the Big Top at Cheltenham Racecourse and received a standing ovation from a big audience. The second performance a month later at Bath Abbey caused the same reaction from a very large audience.

Quotes

"..the young carers were writing lyrics which gave them the chance to talk about how it is for them...to share experiences and allowing them to feel themselves in a safe place"

"This project has had an all round positive effect on the young people. Some have decided to take up music lessons where previously there was no interest"

"When X started the project, she suffered anxiety and was only attending school on a very limited basis and was not socialising with her own age-group at all. As the project unfolded, she was mixing with the other students, attending mainstream school a few hours a week and attending overnight residential. It culminated in her performing a solo piece on the violin in Bath Abbey and Greenbelt Festival in front of hundreds of people."

All above quotes from Leaders of Young Carers Project

"My son was being badly bullied and feeling very down. The project helped to boost his confidence so that when he started his new school the transition all went smoothly and he felt happy with the change. I cannot praise the project enough"
